8. Transportability -

The desire to transport your scooter brings you to a whole new set of considerations. If the scooter you purchase requires a lift, what kind of lift do you want to use? Manufacturers such as Bruno, Harmar, and Silver Star make lifts which load the scooter into a car trunk, mini-van, or truck. Other lifts are designed to carry the scooter outside the vehicle. The type of vehicle usually decides what type of lift you require. Trunk lifts work best on a full sized vehicle. Outside lifts require installment of a class 3 hitch. One thing for sure is that the lift is one more thing which can break down in addition to giving one a substantial monetary consideration. The addition of a lift, though, is a real luxury so picking a good one is important. If you have custom lift requirements, Bruno is really the best for fitting a lift to your needs. I took a tour of their factory and it is very impressive from the Computer Assisted Design terminals down to the laser sheet metal cutters, theirs is a first class operation which apparently hasn't seen the limits of what it can do. They are priced on the high side. I heard it said that "If you want the best, get a Bruno lift. If you want a headache, buy something else." While I am aware that there are some people who would disagree and that there are some other good products out there, I personally have a Bruno Scooter Lift JR. in my van that is over 10 yrs old and still cranking scooters in and out everyday. You generally get what you pay for and this is true for lifts as well.
Buying a lift can be tricky proposition in certain situations. The lift must lift the
scooters weight and also fit the scooter into your vehicle.

If the rider has a caregiver with a strong back, another option is to break down the scooter and load it by hand into the trunk or back seat of the car or van. Scooters like the Shoprider Traveler and the Mini-Traveler are designed with ease of transportability as the primary consideration. Some people own both types of scooters: one to use at home with all the options and a lightweight scooter to use when going out. The Superlight is a brilliantly designed scooter where when disassembled, no one piece weighs more than 20 lbs. so loading is not a strain. Most scooters have at least one component which weighs 35-40 lbs or more. As always, its your choice on a quality of life issue!
