4. Tire size and type -

As a rule of thumb, the rougher the terrain, the larger and wider the tire. Tires 9 in. in diameter or larger will be needed outdoors for surfaces such as grass or uneven terrain. Smaller tires are better indoors on hard, relatively level surfaces because they make the scooter handle better in tight areas. Larger tires are usually found on scooters with a longer wheelbase and generally do not handle well indoors unless you have an exceptionally large home. The scooter with the largest tires we have found are on the Sportster which has 16" front and 20" rears tires. This scooter is great for rolling over just about anything from 5" curbs to ramps and grassy or dirt terrain. Small tires such as those found on the Amigos, the Bravo, Bruno Cub 35, Superlight or the Mini-Traveler handle great indoors especially in tight quarters.
Tires also come in pneumatic or solid configurations.
Pneumatic tires have the most comfortable ride and absorb shock very well. They require maintenance of air pressure and are subject to going flat if punctured. Solid tires eliminate the required maintenance and the risk of going flat but at the expense of a softer ride. Foam filled tires offer the best combination of a softer ride than solid rubber tires as well as puncture resistance. Scooter manufacturers such as Pride are making scooters with actual suspensions so the solid tires won't effect the ride.
When purchasing, it is best to order the scooter with flat free tires since it is usually less expensive than buying them separately afterwards.
The most common tread types available are turf, knobby, lug, and ribbed treads. The type of tread and the width on either tire type determines the amount of traction you will get. Obviously, you will need more traction oudoors so wide tires with a deep rough tread are best (Turf or knobby tires) or larger diameter tires such as those on the Sportster. Ribbed tires give a smoother ride and are best indoors or on a hard, flat surface.
