5. Drive types -

Most scooters are either front or rear wheel driven by a series of belts and pulleys, chains and sprockets, or some variation thereof. Regardless of the type of drive, front wheel scooters will only be good on smooth surfaces and relatively level terrain, will usually handle better indoors, and are usually more compact than rear wheel scooters.
Rear wheel drive is more powerful and will also be good on surfaces outdoors (grass, gravel, dirt) or up ramps. The two types of rear wheel drive are chain or belt and transaxle systems. The advantage of transaxle drive is that it is maintenance free and usually quieter than a chain or belt. Drawback is that the whole unit is replaced if something goes bad and that can be costly. Chain or Belt systems have the disadvantage of requiring a little more maintenance but can also be repaired more inexpensively because each part can be replaced individually. Almost all scooters are made with a sealed transaxle today. There are still a number of used chain drive scooters still out there but they are becoming increasingly rare.
